Researchers discover how the brain is able to remember complex information in a short time

Suppose you meet an old friend on the street. You chat for a while and, finally, decide to call to talk one day with more calm. He gives you his phone number, but you don’t have any paper to write it. Anyway. You are close to home and sure you will be able to remember the number until you get there and make a note on the agenda.

A medicine for epilepsy has proved its effectiveness against a severe neurodegenerative disease

A group of researchers of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) has shown that the valproic acid, a medicine used against epilepsy, is also effective to treat a minority neurodegenerative disease: the X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. The result of the research has been published in the electronic edition of the American magazine Human Molecular Genetics.

IDIBELL's impact factor doubles in five years

During 2009, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Center (IDIBELL) has increased its scientific results. The total impact factor of the articles published by researchers at IDIBELL during 2009 is higher than 2,900 points. This data, which still must be validated by the group leaders, is 600 points higher than 2008 impact factor and doubles the impact factor of 2004. It puts IDIBELL among one of the Spanish institutes with more scientific production.

Bellvitge Hospital is studying a new technique to treat cerebral haemorrhages

Neurosurgeons of Bellvitge University Hospital, in Barcelona (Spain), and researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) participate in an international project, called CLEAR III, which assesses the effectiveness of the administration of a thrombolytic drug called rt-PA to treat intra-ventricular cerebral haemorrhages (hemorrhagic stroke). There is no international consensus about the best treatment of these types of hemorrhagic strokes.

IDIBELL and UB researchers identify a gene that causes movement problems in mice

Image: on the left, healthy mouse cerebellum section; on the right, cerebellum section of HERC1 mutation gene mouse almost with no Purkinje cells (in brown)

The mutation of a gene that encodes a giant protein called HERC1 in mice causes progressive degeneration of neurons in the cerebellum, whose function is to fine-tune vertebrates’ gait and balance. This is the conclusion of a study coordinated by Jose Luis Rosa, researcher at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona (IDIBELL) and the Department of Physiological Sciences II of the Bellvitge Campus of the University of Barcelona. The results have been published in the journal PLoS Genetics. This finding could be helpful in the development of new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
